With the quarterfinals and semifinals approaching, the games promise to deliver intense competition and showcase the talents of young athletes across the region

The Nyanza Region Secondary School Sports Association games are in full swing, generating excitement both on and off the field. Here are some key developments:

St. Mary's Yala ready for quarterfinal showdown

St. Mary's Yala Rugby 7s, the reigning champions, are poised for a thrilling encounter in the quarterfinals.

After dominating Group A with a perfect record, they'll face their nemesis, Maseno School, on Friday at Cardinal Otunga Mosocho.

Maseno had a more challenging path in Group B, experiencing mixed results.

Yala's confidence is high, fueled by convincing victories over Cardinal Otunga (26-14) and St. Paul's Gekano (34-5) in the group stage.

Key players Albert Otieno and Joseph Onyango were instrumental, each scoring two tries in the opening match and combining for another brace in the second.

Coach George Kerima emphasized their focus on the ultimate prize: "We are taking it one game at a time. We've seen the quality of rugby and made adjustments to reach our goal of getting to nationals."

Yala Table Tennis trio shines

Beyond the rugby field, St. Mary's Yala also celebrates table tennis success. The trio of Trevor Emmanuel, Branson Jeremiah, and Actros Otieno all secured spots in the Nyanza region finals.

They'll face a formidable challenge from Kisii School on Friday.

Ambira High School makes a resounding return

In football action, Ambira High School has announced their return to the regional stage in emphatic fashion.

They currently sit atop Group B with a perfect record, thanks in large part to the heroics of Alex "Alonso" Mchumbe.

Mchumbe's scoring prowess continues, replicating his winning goal from the Siaya County finals against St. Mary's Yala with the match-winner against Tonga High School.

He also contributed a goal in their 3-0 victory over Matutu. Coach Jerry Opondo, while pleased, is keeping the team focused:

"The boys are focused because we know we are not there yet. Our target was to expose the talent we have at Ambira, and I am thrilled the boys are showing that on the field."

Despite securing a spot in the semifinals with a game to spare, Ambira remains grounded and determined to continue their impressive run.

Other football Group B updates

Tonga High School and Matutu follow Ambira in Group B with three points each. Matutu secured a 2-1 win over Sameta, while Tonga edged them out 1-0.

This is just a snapshot of the excitement unfolding at the Nyanza Region Secondary School games.

With the quarterfinals and semifinals approaching, the games promise to deliver intense competition and showcase the talents of young athletes across the region.
